Trees

Collage.

Beginning with the discovery of an old folder of architectural veneer samples in a skip bin, carefully labelled with their botanical names and origins, Trees was inspired by research into the vastly different histories of these timbers, harvested from the far corners of the globe. Harking from European plantations to tropical rainforests, each sample possessed a unique set of qualities. Pictorial studies of the tree types were made in gardens around Melbourne; back in the studio the studies were referenced to inform abstract collages, each portraying a detail of a tree cut from its own timber.
