Living Room (2009) is a site specific commissioned sculpture for a private collection. This artwork is a space one enters, acting architectonically upon the viewer, swallowing you as you move deeper into its circular form. It is composed of a thick coverage of indigenous grasses, planted on the tightly curved and steep sided mound of soil.
Appealing to an interest in human schemes to structure “biological” nature, particularly through gardening, Joanne was inspired to produce a work which combined a formal geometry of a round space with the organic swelling and movement of the grasses. A curious effect occurs in the space, contrasting with the external landscape.
The surrounding landscape speaks of human intervention, through pasture land, architecture, even the bay itself, which is subject to “dredging”. Living Room forms a new intervention upon the landscape. Sitting down the viewer is encompassed by the plants of the former landscape, returning now, beautiful and sustainable.
